The Crowd Problem and the Solution
The most visited sites in Europe attract millions of visitors in July and August. Venice, the Uffizi in Florence, the Alhambra in Granada, the Eiffel Tower: if you are going to these places in peak summer, you need timed-entry reservations booked weeks or months in advance. Without them, you are looking at hours in a queue.
Our recommendation is to build an itinerary that balances iconic destinations with places where crowds simply do not show up. American travelers need to understand the Schengen Zone rules. U.S. passport holders can spend a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined. Most European summer itineraries stay well within this limit, but for extended travel or repeat trips, it is worth tracking carefully. Confirm current ETIAS requirements before traveling, as the system continues to be rolled out and requirements may have evolved.
