Vietnam from North to South: How to Plan a Luxury Itinerary That Does It Justice

Vietnam Rewards the Traveler Who Takes Time

Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometers from the Chinese border to the Mekong Delta, and the country changes character dramatically as you move through it. The north is cooler, more traditionally Vietnamese, and anchored by one of Asia's great cities. The center holds ancient kingdoms and some of the finest beaches in Southeast Asia. The south is frenetic, tropical, and endlessly energetic.

A proper Vietnam trip needs at least ten days. Two weeks is better. The country has the infrastructure for luxury travel at every point along the route.

Hanoi: Where to Start

Hanoi is one of Southeast Asia's most atmospheric cities. The Old Quarter's 36 streets, the Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn, the street food scene that puts most capital cities to shame: it earns at least two full days. The Capella Hanoi, which opened to considerable acclaim, has set a new standard for luxury accommodation in the city.

Ha Long Bay: Non-Negotiable

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. Around 1,600 limestone karst islands rise from emerald water across nearly 1,500 square kilometers. The right way to experience it is on an overnight or two-night private cruise on a well-appointed junk. The difference between a good operator and a poor one is significant; this is not the place to compromise.

Hoi An: The Heart of Central Vietnam

Hoi An's ancient town is one of the best-preserved trading ports in Southeast Asia and a genuine pleasure to explore on foot. The beaches of An Bang and Cua Dai are a short ride away. The Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai sits between the town and the sea and is among the finest resort properties in Southeast Asia.

Ho Chi Minh City: End on a High

The south is a different country in temperament. Ho Chi Minh City moves at its own extraordinary pace and the history embedded in it, from the War Remnants Museum to the Cu Chi Tunnels, adds weight and context to the entire trip.

Suggested Pacing

  • Hanoi: 2 nights

  • Ha Long Bay: 2 nights on a cruise
